Implants for denture wearers

Implant-retained overdentures

Implant-retained dentures or overdentures describe a denture that doesn’t move in your mouth because it is attached to two dental implants that act as anchors. These dentures are classified as ‘implant-retained’ because the denture is still, also, supported by the soft gum tissues.

The two dental implants can retain the dentures with different types of attachments;

  • a small bar with clips
  • ball and o-rings
  • clips that snap directly on the implants

Implant-supported overdentures

An implant-supported denture or overdenture is a denture that is sitting on four or more dental implants. These dentures are classified as ‘implant-supported’ because the denture sits entirely on the dental implant fixtures and only lightly touches the soft gum tissues.

The implants prevent the denture from moving as well as supporting the dentures from hitting the gums. The added advantage is that the more dental implants used, the less bone degeneration and the dentures are more stable.

The most important advantage of removable prosthetics or overdentures is that your implants and dentures are much easier to keep clean than non-removable options. They’re less expensive, in general, and easier to implement. Plus, they’re less costly to repair when they break.

Visit Face & Smile to find out if overdentures could help you.
